# Biography

Mariane Riss discovered composition, and a passion for it, in 2012. In 2013, meeting the composers Jean-Charles Gandrille and Franck Krawczyk confirmed her in this path. In 2014 she worked on several occasions with the composer Ivane-Béatrice Bellocq.

In 2016 she entered her first competition, the Leopold Bellan International Competition in Paris, and won second prize for composition with *Absence*, a duo for violin and piano, premiered at the Royal College of Music in London. Her duo for cello and piano *Départ* was selected for the Music at Thornham summer festival (England) in 2017, and later for the Présences Féminines festival. In 2021, the artistic jury of the project “On the traces of Stravinsky” chose her piano piece *Éclat de rêve*, premiered in Brussels.

In 2019, the jury of the Leopold Bellan Competition decided to award, for the first time, an honorary prize for composition. Mariane Riss received it for *Murmures de l'univers*, a trio for two cellos and piano.

Before composing, she earned a doctorate and the *agrégation* in mathematics, led research projects in academia and then in industry, and taught at university. Asked about the link between these two periods of her life, she speaks of the concentration, rigour and perseverance that research and composition both demand.
